Carnival Monday is a public holiday in Antigua and Barbuda that opens the final two days of the nation's annual Carnival, a summer festival held each August in the capital, St. John's, to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people across the British Caribbean.
On Carnival Monday, government offices, schools, and many businesses in Antigua and Barbuda close for the holiday. The day traditionally begins before sunrise with J'ouvert, a raucous street celebration in which revelers cover themselves in paint, mud, oil, or powder and dance through the streets of St. John's to steelpan and soca music. Later in the day, additional festivities and performances continue, building anticipation for Carnival Tuesday, when the more elaborate, costumed Parade of Bands takes over the capital as the season's grand finale.
Antigua and Barbuda's Carnival began in 1957, created to commemorate the abolition of slavery across the British Caribbean, formalized in 1834, and to give the young nation a homegrown showcase for its music, costume-making, and performing arts traditions. Unlike the pre-Lenten carnivals of Trinidad or New Orleans, Antigua's Carnival is a summer festival timed around Emancipation Day, reflecting its roots in celebrating freedom rather than a Christian liturgical calendar. As the opening day of the festival's climactic stretch, Carnival Monday carries that same spirit of communal joy, cultural pride, and historical remembrance at the heart of the celebration.
Carnival Monday shares its summer timing with Barbados's Crop Over festival, another major Caribbean celebration scheduled outside the Christian calendar. It also joins Antigua and Barbuda's wider calendar of national milestones, alongside Independence Day, observed each November 1.
