Overview

The National Day of Spain is the country's national holiday, held every year on October 12. It is also commonly called the Día de la Hispanidad, a name that reflects Spain's cultural legacy around the world, especially in Hispanic America. The day celebrates the nation's history, unity, and ties with the international community.

What It Is

Government institutions at national and regional levels close, as do banks and stores. The centerpiece is a solemn tribute to the national flag and a parade of the Armed Forces and State Security Forces in Madrid, usually attended by the monarch, the Royal Family, the Prime Minister, and other senior officials. Delegations from guest countries can attend, and in recent years the marching contingents have used the Paseo de la Castellana. Other tribute, cultural, and religious events take place across Spain and abroad.

Why It Matters

The date has layered roots. Religiously it traces to the Catholic tradition of Mary appearing to Saint James in Caesaraugusta, today's Zaragoza, in AD 40, and in 1642 the city named Our Lady of the Pillar a symbol of Hispanidad. A royal decree of 1892 then made October 12 a national day for the fourth centenary of Columbus's voyage. Spanish law today says the date symbolizes the completion of a state built on cultural and political diversity and the start of a period of linguistic and cultural projection beyond Europe.

Interesting Facts

  • Pilgrimages to Zaragoza to honor Our Lady of the Pillar began in the early eighth century.
  • In 1730 Pope Clement XII allowed the feast of Our Lady of the Pillar throughout the Spanish Empire.
  • The day was officially called Día de la Hispanidad until 1987, though the name remains in everyday use.

Why This Holiday Endures

Spaniards and Spanish communities abroad still gather around the day, which pairs civic ceremony with cultural and religious observance. Celebrations tend to emphasize Spain's contributions through exploration and its influence on Hispanic American societies, and the day is also taken as an occasion to celebrate Hispanic diversity, brotherhood, and shared heritage among Hispanic countries.
