Overview
Carnival is Grenada's biggest annual festival, an explosion of costumed parades, calypso, soca, and steelpan music celebrating island culture. Known locally as Spicemas, it is held in August rather than in the pre-Lenten season observed by many other Carnival traditions, drawing visitors and diaspora Grenadians back home for the celebration.
What It Is
Each August, Grenada holds a multi-day national celebration. It opens with J'ouvert, a pre-dawn street party where revelers dance through the capital, St. George's, often covered in paint, mud, or oil as part of the traditional "jab jab" masquerade. The following days bring calypso and soca competitions and steelpan performances. The festival builds to the Parade of the Bands, when elaborately costumed troupes march through the streets in a final procession of music, color, and dance.
Why It Matters
Carnival traditions reached the Caribbean through European colonizers who observed the pre-Lenten Christian festival, but enslaved and later free Afro-Caribbean communities reshaped the celebration into an expression of identity, resistance, and joy, using masking and music to reclaim public space. In Grenada, the festival grew into a showcase for the island's calypso and soca artists and a source of national pride, distinct from the pre-Lenten carnivals still held elsewhere in the region. Grenada eventually moved its celebration to August, separating it from the traditional pre-Lenten calendar and giving islanders, including many living abroad, a summer homecoming built around shared culture.
