Overview
Indigenous Resistance Day, observed on October 12 in Nicaragua and Venezuela, honors the Indigenous peoples of the Americas and their resistance to European colonization. In Venezuela it replaced the older DÃa de la Raza, reframing the date around those who lived in the Americas before 1492.
What It Is
Indigenous Resistance Day is a national public holiday in both countries and falls on October 12 each year; in 2026 that is a Monday. Offices and schools close, and the day is used to recognize Indigenous history and identity.
Why It Matters
For much of the twentieth century the date was marked in Latin America as DÃa de la Raza, a celebration of Columbus's 1492 arrival and of Hispanic heritage. Critics argued that this framing overlooked Indigenous peoples, who suffered displacement and loss after European colonization. Venezuela changed the name to Indigenous Resistance Day in 2002, recasting October 12 as a day to honor the ways Indigenous communities resisted conquest and colonization, and to recognize their continuing presence and contributions.
Holiday in Context
Indigenous Resistance Day is one of several reframings of October 12. Argentina renamed its day Respect for Cultural Diversity in 2010, Colombia adopted Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in 2021, and many U.S. jurisdictions observe Indigenous Peoples' Day. Elsewhere the date keeps other meanings, including Spain's National Day.
