What It Is

Mazingira Day is a national public holiday on 10 October, and its focus is on conservation. A national event is held each year with an environmental theme; the 2025 theme was "Citizen Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship", with the main event at Kabuyefwe Primary School in Trans-Nzoia County. Tree planting and environmental stewardship are central to how the day is marked.

Why It Matters

The 10 October holiday began as Moi Day in 1988, created under President Daniel Moi. It was dropped after the 2010 Constitution, restored following a 2017 High Court ruling, and later renamed Huduma Day and then Utamaduni Day. In April 2024 it became Mazingira Day. Each name reflected a different national priority, and the current one points the holiday toward environmental responsibility and shared action on ecological challenges.

Interesting Facts

  • The holiday has carried four names: Moi Day, Huduma Day, Utamaduni Day and now Mazingira Day.
  • Huduma is Swahili for "service" or "care", and Utamaduni means "culture".
  • The First Lady's Mazingira Awards, launched in 2023, are presented each year on Mazingira Day.
  • The awards support a goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
