Overview
Culturama is Nevis' answer to the Caribbean's many carnivals, a weeks-long summer festival celebrating the island's culture and welcoming home Nevisians who have moved abroad. It features nightly music, food fairs, and concerts, building to a final parade through the streets of Charlestown, the island's capital, on Culturama Day.
What It Is
During Culturama, Nevisians hold nightly music events, street parties, food festivals, and concerts across the island. The celebration builds toward its final day, when a parade moves through downtown Charlestown, the island's capital, drawing residents and Nevisians who have returned home from abroad to join family and friends. Held annually in late July and early August, the festival gives the island its own distinct alternative to the carnivals held on other Caribbean islands, centered on Nevisian music, food, and community gathering rather than a pre-Lenten calendar.
Why It Matters
Culturama was conceived in February 1974 by the Nevis Dramatic and Cultural Society, known as NEDACS, which wanted an event that celebrated Nevisian identity on the island's own terms rather than following the pre-Lenten Carnival model used elsewhere in the Caribbean. From the start, the festival was built around welcoming home Nevisians who had emigrated for work, giving diaspora families a set time each year to reconnect with the island and with each other. That founding purpose, combining cultural pride with a homecoming for the diaspora, has shaped Culturama ever since, distinguishing it from other regional carnivals focused primarily on public spectacle.
