What It Is

Battle of Angamos is observed on 8 October each year as a public holiday across all of Peru, with no regional limits. The date is fixed, so it falls on a different weekday from year to year; in 2026 it lands on a Thursday. As with other national holidays, the day is set aside from ordinary work and devoted to remembering the 1879 naval engagement and the Peruvian sailors who fought in it.

Why It Matters

The battle ended Peru's effort to contest control of the sea. After the loss of the frigate Independencia, Rear Admiral Miguel Grau used Huáscar to harass the Chilean coast, but at Punta Angamos he was drawn into a trap set by two Chilean divisions. A shell striking the bridge killed him, and Huáscar was captured after nearly three hours of fighting. Chile then held the Pacific coast and could launch its land invasion of Peru. Grau, regarded as Peru's finest naval officer, became a lasting symbol of courage in defeat.

Interesting Facts

  • The battle saw the first combat use of anti-armor shells, which proved devastating against Huáscar's armor.
  • Before Angamos, Huáscar sank or captured 14 transports, including one carrying an entire cavalry regiment.
  • Reports on the engagement appeared in European and American magazines, as naval powers studied turreted armored ships.

Did You Know?

Huáscar did not vanish after its capture. Chile repaired it and sailed it under the Chilean flag for years, and today it survives as a floating museum in the port of Talcahuano.
