Why It Matters
Uruguay's path to nationhood was unusually indirect. What is now Uruguay, then known as the Banda Oriental, was contested territory between the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata (Argentina) and the Empire of Brazil, leading to the Cisplatine War in the 1820s. The 1828 Preliminary Peace Convention, negotiated with British mediation, ended the war by creating Uruguay as an independent buffer state between its larger neighbors. Uruguay's first constitution, sworn in on July 18, 1830, completed that process by establishing the legal and institutional framework of the new republic, formally defining its government and cementing its sovereignty.
