Overview
Heroes and Foreparents Day is a public holiday in the British Virgin Islands. It honors the heroes and foreparents, the earlier generations whose work and sacrifice helped build the territory. It is observed each year as a national day off.
What It Is
Heroes and Foreparents Day is a nationwide public holiday in the British Virgin Islands. Government offices and most businesses close for the day, giving residents time to take part in tributes and community events that recognize the people who contributed to the territory's development, or simply to spend it with family.
Why It Matters
The holiday's name points to two kinds of remembrance: heroes, who stand out for particular achievements, and foreparents, the ancestors whose everyday labor and endurance built communities across the islands. By setting aside a day for both, the territory acknowledges that its history was shaped by well-known leaders and by countless ordinary people alike, and it encourages younger generations to know that heritage.
