Heroes' Day is a Zimbabwean public holiday honoring the men and women who died in the country's liberation struggle against white minority rule, which ended with independence in 1980. Observed on the second Monday of August, it is followed the next day by Defence Forces Day, together forming a two-day period of national remembrance.
On Heroes' Day, Zimbabwe holds official ceremonies at the National Heroes' Acre in Harare, a memorial site where prominent liberation figures are buried. The President and senior officials typically lay wreaths and deliver speeches honoring fallen fighters, while similar smaller ceremonies take place at heroes' shrines around the country. Government offices, schools, and many businesses close for the public holiday, and the following day, Defence Forces Day, extends the period of national commemoration with additional tributes to the armed forces.
Heroes' Day traces its significance to Zimbabwe's long armed struggle against white minority rule in Rhodesia, a conflict often called the Second Chimurenga, which lasted through much of the 1960s and 1970s. Thousands of fighters and civilians died before the war ended and the country achieved independence in 1980. The holiday, established soon after independence, was created to formally recognize that sacrifice and to root the new nation's identity in the memory of the liberation movement.
